Exploring the “Self” Portrait

Meet yourselves in a different way in a self-portrait and  learn  human expression and anatomie, the self is always at hand and an interesting subject to learn from and to learn about ourselves. 
We are experimenting with pencil, charcoal, watercolor pen, Chinese white and mirrors to capture in a  diverse manner and  different techniques ourselfs.

Class Structure 

  • Shading and light. We are going to focus on a specific area of our face while we look into a mirror, concentrating only on shades and highlights and not lines or specific features of the face.

  • A brief introduction to the Loomis method of how to construct a face. And develop a drawing while using the method. 

  • We combine what we learned with the shading and highlighting in class 1  with the Loomis Method and get more familiar with our faces and how to give it depth and live.

  • Introduction of watercolor pen, charcoal, pencil and Chinese white and how to use it to create a more expressive self-portrait. 

  • Now as we are more familiar with all what we learned we do a final version of our self-portraits.  

There will be at the beginning of each class a small  art history lesson included as inspiration and some closer looks at specific artists approaches to the self-portrait. 

About Lea Baecksteiner

Lea is an artist and illustrator with a Masters in Fine Arts and Illustration from the Neue Kunst Schule in? Basel, Switzerland.  Her range of artistic media includes oil, gouache, watercolor, ink and digital painting.   In addition to her work as a fine artist, Lea provides illustrations for? books, magazines and printed matter.  Her style has been described as being playful, minimalist and well-proportioned.  An accomplished artist, Lea has exhibited in New York City, Basel and Boston.  ?Originally from Switzerland, she now lives and works in the greater Boston area.
